It Starts in Your Yard: Rewilding Your Neighborhood
and Rebuilding Community, One Garden at a Time
Wednesday, December 09
6:30pm - 7:30pm
Main Library
Elgin RoomExplore hands-on ways to restore your yard with native plants, support birds, bees, and butterflies, and inspire broader change in your neighborhood and community. Please register.
This participatory presentation explores how to restore your yard by rebuilding the relationships among native plants, birds, bees, and butterflies. Moving beyond the typical pollinator garden, Brian “Fox” Ellis will guide participants in researching the larger native ecosystem and reintroducing its plants to their own yards, creating beacons for broader change.
Together, participants will map successful strategies for restoring their neighborhoods and strengthening the larger community. The program will also explore ways to work with organizations that share this passion, including Wild Ones of Greater Kane County, Kane County Audubon, the Illinois Audubon Society, the Illinois Native Plant Society, and Illinois Extension Master Gardeners. Expect a hands-on, minds-on experience rather than a lecture.
Brian “Fox” Ellis has helped transform three communities, planted 12,000 trees, and landscaped the grounds of several schools, businesses, and hospitals. Through this work, he has created wildlife corridors and established an eBird Hotspot from scratch. Fox currently manages the Illinois Audubon Society’s Bird and Butterfly Sanctuary Certification program, which seeks to restore communities throughout Illinois.
This program is in partnership with the Wild Ones of Greater Kane County.
